The New York Mets’ front office search has the club focusing on a name familiar to Big Apple baseball fans. Per SNY’s Andy Martino:
There is a LOT of talk from league sources today that the Mets are getting closer to choosing a GM. Here’s what we know:
There has not been much traction with Adam Cromie in recent days, though he’s not officially out.
The Mets increased their digging on Billy Eppler late last week and he is seen as a strong candidate, according to league sources.
Eppler became general manager of the Angels in 2015, with Los Angeles plucking him from the New York Yankees’ front office, where he was Brian Cashman’s right-hand man.
Eppler made some extremely bold moves before being fired in 2020: signing N.J. native Mike Trout to a 12-year, $430 million contract, giving Washington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon a seven-year, $245 million contract and convincing two-way Japanese star Shohei Ohtani to come to Los Angeles.
Despite those deals, Trout, a three-time American League MVP and the face of Major League Baseball, has not tasted the postseason since 2014.

The Mets are searching high and low for candidates who will interview for the club’s openings at manager, general manager and president of baseball operations.
Steve Cohen and Sandy Alderson have struggled in their front office search, with several people passing on the club, including Oakland A’s president Billy Beane, Milwaukee Brewers president David Stearns, and former Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs general manager Theo Epstein.
