In the world of drag racing, there are plenty of ways to get down the strip but the V8 is never a bad choice. And whether you choose a big American V8 or a complicated German one, you’re going to get down the strip in a hurry.

That’s the lesson in this trio of drag races from This vs That, which pits a tuned BMW M8 Competition Coupe against a 2006 Pontiac GTO. Both are highly modified, although each has been designed for different purposes.

Of course, both are really fast but the BMW is a comfort machine that maintains its luxurious interior and aims to send you flying down the autobahn at over 200 mph. The Pontiac, on the other hand, is a drift car and therefore is much less focused on comfort.

The BMW is based on the M8 Competition and was modified by Steve “Yes That Dinan” Dinan. It’s been tuned to make 900 hp at the crank and to do it in sumptuous comfort while also allowing you to carve a canyon and not fall down it.

The Pontiac GTO, meanwhile, has a heavily modified LS3 V8 that makes 830 hp at the wheels. With some stickier tires fitted, the rear-wheel drive Pontiac is ready to take on the AWD BMW.

As was, perhaps, predictable, from a standstill, the BMW’s automatic transmission and all-wheel drive give it the edge. But things get much more interesting in the roll race. Watch the video below to find out if the drift car can take on its more powerful German rival.
