KENNEWICK, Wash. -- A 9-month-old child was injured and transported to the hospital after a single car crash near the Blue Bridge in Kennewick Monday morning.
According to the Washington State Patrol, 22-year-old Cassandra Welch from West Richland was driving eastbound on SR 240, on the ramp to northbound SR 395 shortly after 1 a.m. Monday.
Officials say Welch lost control of her car and left the roadway. The car struck a Jersey barrier, then crossed all lanes and hit a guardrail.
Welch and a 9-month-old infant in the car were both injured and taken to area hospitals.
According to WSP, both the infant and Welch were not properly strapped into the vehicle at the time of the crash. Trooper Chris Thorson tells Action News that the child was in a car seat; however, that car seat was not properly secured in the vehicle. Troopers say the car seat was in the front passenger seat and was tipped upside down when they arrived.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, officials say right now it's unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved.
Charges are pending against Welch.
