Picture-Perfect Poskitt Strikes Again as Men’s Soccer Scores 1-0 NCAA Victory Over Swarthmore

Senior breaks scoreless tie with strike in 89th minute

MEDFORD, Mass. (November 13, 2021)  – Senior Jay Poskitt snapped a scoreless tie in the 89th minute to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Swarthmore College Saturday in an NCAA opening-round match at Tufts University's Bello Field.

With the teams seemingly headed to extra time, junior Bruno Andino began the winning play with a free kick after a Swarthmore foul gave the Ducks an opportunity from a dangerous area. Andino delivered a service that was quickly sent out of danger by the Garnet. Kabeiseman collected the ball to the right of the goal and dribbled to the end line. The Portland, Oregon native drove a cross into a scoring area, where Poskitt sent it into the left corner of the goal for the only tally in the match.

Poskitt, the hero in the Ducks' double overtime victory over Arcadia in the MAC Freedom semifinals, has two game-winning goals this season.

Senior Aedan Boriotti made one save in posting his eighth clean sheet of the season. With the victory, the Ducks moved to 13-6-2. Stevens has won at least one match in the NCAA Tournament in each of its last three appearances.

Max Kral made a pair of saves for Swarthmore, who finished the 2021 season 11-5-2.  The Ducks moved to 5-2-1 in the last seven meetings between the teams. It was the first matchup between the programs since 2015.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens finished with an 11-6 advantage in shots, although the teams combined for just six attempts in the second half.
  • The Ducks' swarming defensive group held Swarthmore to a season low in both shots and shots on goal.
  • Swarthmore held a slim 3-2 edge in corners, marking just the fourth time this season the Ducks have been outearned in corners.
  • Stevens has yet to concede a goal in the postseason, covering four matches.

Unsung Hero
  • In something that will not appear in the box score, junior Sean Ryan had an instrumental role in the winning goal, deceiving his defender into thinking he was going to make a play on Kabeiseman's service. The trickery allowed the ball to reach Poskitt cleanly, leading to the winning play.

From the Sidelines - Head Coach Dale Jordan
  • "What an incredible effort from this group of student-athletes! We fought all the way to the end against a very talented and well coached Swarthmore team."
  • "To get to the last 32 is a testament to the character of this group and we are extremely proud to represent Stevens on the national stage."
  • "We have to refuel and prep for a massive game against the reigning national champs, Tufts, tomorrow."
