The latest evidence we’ve discovered of Google’s Pixel foldable reveals a device that looks more like the Oppo Find N than the Samsung Galaxy Fold. For over a year now, we’ve been tracking the development of Google’s first ever foldable Pixel phone. Over the course of that time, it’s gone by two separate internal codenames – first “Passport” and more recently a bird-themed codename, “Pipit.” While the final name is far from confirmed, for simplicity, let’s call it the Google Pixel Fold.

Google’s Pixel Fold (the name we’re giving it until we have something else) has been a hot topic of discussion for quite some time. At one point we thought it would arrive by year’s end and would likely be at least hinted at in Google’s October hardware event, but that clearly didn’t happen. Then we heard of its imminent demise with the same sources now saying that Google had halted the entire project and stopped production. Then we heard from a reliable leaker that he had no indication from his sources that the Pixel Fold was cancelled.

It’s no secret that Google fumbled with its massive December update for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro with multiple serious issues being experienced by users. While Pixel 6 series owners wait for the end of January for Google to release the fixed firmware, this month’s Android Security Update is read to download the other Pixel phones that are still in their support period.

Given the relative success of Samsung’s foldable devices, it’s not surprising to know that Google is working on its own version. In fact, this has been a long-standing rumor and some actually expected them to release or at least announce a Pixel Fold device last 2021. Well obviously that didn’t happen but it doesn’t mean we’re not getting one. A listing for a device codenamed “Pipit” showed up on Geekbench and this may be the long-awaited foldable phone from Google.

If you’re like me, you held off on pulling the trigger and buying Google’s latest flagship smartphone. Don’t get me wrong, when the Tensor-powered Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro landed in our office, I was extremely pleased with just about everything offered by both iterations. Initially, I was convinced that the larger Pixel 6 Pro would be my hands-down choice because I prefer a larger phone and I have become accustomed to a 120 Hz display. That alone was reason enough for me to dismiss the “smaller” Pixel 6. I say smaller in quotation marks because, in my hand, it is only slightly smaller than my OnePlus 9 Pro.

As the foldable smartphone market heats up with more devices, OPPO Find N being the latest; the inquisitiveness for a foldable phone from Google becomes more intense. The Pixel Fold, as it is popularly known would be the next step in smartphone evolution from Google. It was expected to hit markets around the fall last year, but that didn’t happen, in fact, rumors had it that the tech giant was dropping plans of a foldable smartphone even before its launch.

Following the release of Android 12L Beta 2, there wasn’t all that much to talk about in the way of new features. The software release focused more on bug fixes, which makes sense considering it was the second release of the beta software. But thanks to the team over at 9to5Google, we might have a better idea of what a Pixel Fold could actually end up looking like.

On Wednesday, we found new Android 12L assets that suggest Google’s upcoming foldable could take after the Oppo Find N form factor rather than Samsung’s Galaxy Fold. 9to5Google has heard that this device could be named the “Pixel Notepad” with a lower price point than expected.

After news of Google’s apparently not-so-canceled foldable being known internally as the “Pipit” comes a report that says the search giant may eschew the ‘Fold’ branding in favor of something that doesn’t make you think of Samsung’s Galaxy Fold series.
