Tennis fans looking forward to seeing Roger Federer play in the Wimbledon soon will have to hold their breath a little longer. After missing the US Open tournament due to surgery, the Swiss tennis legend is not quite there yet, according to his coach.

Federer's coach, former top-3 player Ivan Ljubicic, was brutally honest about his assessment of the Swiss star's condition and status for the Wimbledon. He told Stats Perform:

“I think there are very few chances, he is still recovering and knowing him, he wants to be sure he can play to win the tournament and be at 100 per cent… So I think the Australian Open is not a real possibility right now. But he will go step by step because he is 40 years old now and he needs to be patient. He cannot recover as quickly as he used to.”

Roger Federer's last appearance in a Grand Slam Tournament was in July, where he lost in the Wimbledon quarter-finals to Polish tennis star Hubert Hurkacz in swift fashion. Afterwards, Federer underwent surgery on his knee. While surely the Swiss legend is raring to get back on the court, Federer's coach thinks it's better to not rush things and let him recuperate fully.

At least one of Federer's contemporaries are also undecided on whether they will attend the prestigious event. Rafael Nadal, one of the many rivals of Roger Federer, has confirmed that he will be playing in the Wimbledon. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic (who lost in heartbreaking fashion to Daniil Medvedev in the US Open Finals) is awaiting the medical protocols set in place before making his decision.

Hopefully, Roger Federer makes his return to the court soon. He's arguably the game' greatest player, and it would be a shame to see him go out like this.
