Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse quarterback Dillon Markiewicz will seek a transfer, he wrote Sunday evening on Twitter.
The second-year freshman from Texas departs after serving as a backup each of his first two seasons. He played sparingly, appearing in a couple games late last season.
Markiewicz was a late addition to SU’s 2020 recruiting class, one of two quarterbacks the Orange brought in last cycle. He was rated the No. 62 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2020 by 247Sports.
He’s is the eighth Syracuse player to leave the program since the start of fall practice in early August, the most in the Power Five. Six have entered the transfer portal, while two others left the program for undisclosed reasons.
Players can transfer at any point until May 1 and retain their eligibility for next season, under new legislation put in place earlier this year.
To help compensate for player departures, a one-year waiver was approved last month that allows schools to sign 32 players in the 2022 class, seven more than the usual 25-player limit.
The extra seven scholarships can only go toward replacing transfers who leave after the end of the fall semester or Dec. 15, whichever comes earlier. In Syracuse’s case, it’s that Dec. 15 date.
Markiewicz’s departure doesn’t have much impact on SU’s quarterback depth. Garrett Shrader remains the starting quarterback with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
JaCobian Morgan, the other quarterback who came in with Markiewicz last year, is the backup. Freshman Justin Lamson and walk-on Luke MacPhail round out the position group.
