The New York Mets made some promising moves last offseason that looked like it was going to lead the Mets to a playoff appearance. The Mets had a promising start and were even in first place of the NL East for quite some time. Unfortunately for the Mets they collapsed late in the season and finished third in the NL East with a 77-85 record.

Although the Mets did not finish where they wanted to, there were still some bright spots throughout the season that included an incredible start and some nice new additions at the trade deadline. Owner Steve Cohen has shown that he will spend the money to try to make the Mets a World Series contender.

The Mets had a disappointing year. When you lose the best pitcher in baseball in Jacob DeGrom due to injury, they can’t expect much. Add on the loss of Jacob DeGrom with below-average hitting with runners in scoring position that the Mets had all last season, and the team is bound to fail.

The Mets are going to have a long offseason. They need to make some additions that can come in and make an immediate impact for them. Let’s take a look at a few players that the Mets should add to make their team contenders for a World Series.

Three Players The Mets Should Target This Off Season

Kris Bryant

Kris Bryant is one of the best third baseman in baseball and also has some history playing the outfield which could come back as a benefit for the Mets, as they need some outfielders. The Mets brought in Javier Baez who was a long teammate of Kris Bryant with the Chicago Cubs. It might be easier to convince Bryant to come to the Mets if Baez can have some conversations with him and talk to him about how he loves New York City.

Adding Bryant would be adding a championship mindset. This is something that the Mets definitely need. On top of that, Bryant is one of the best free agents that the Mets could sign this offseason. Bryant is a career .278/.376/.880 hitter. He has belted 167 home runs and has a career WAR of 28.7.

The Mets have shown time and time again that they need an elite hitter to come in and be a staple for their lineup. Bringing Bryant in will definitely help that. He won’t solve all the Mets’ problems, but he will definitely be a step in the right direction to help them figure it out.

Starling Marte

Starling Marte has shown that he is one of the best center fielders in baseball. He’s an elite hitter who provides above-average defense in center field. Marte could definitely come in and help this Mets team as they desperately need some outfield help. Right now the Mets have some questions in the outfield as it looks like Brandon Nimmo will be the only outfielder that’s certain to return next season.

Marte is coming off an incredible season in which he batted .310 and led the league in stolen bases with 47. He also was able to put up these type of offensive numbers in two of the least friendly ballparks in baseball playing for the Miami Marlins and the Oakland Athletics. When watching Marte you can tell that he’s one of the elite hitters of baseball due to his approach. This is exactly what the Mets need as they need a professional hitter who can come in and make things happen for their lineup. They struggled all last season to score runs. Adding somebody who hit .310 and stole 47 bases will definitely help out a struggling offense.

Kevin Gausman

The Mets starting pitching staff isn’t bad by any means and they are part of the main reason why they had some success last season. When there is an elite starting pitcher on the market and you have the money to spend, there’s no reason not to go after him if you address your other needs.

If the Mets can go sign an outfielder and add some more elite bats to their lineup but still have money left over, they need to take a look at Kevin Gausman.

Gausman had an elite season last year with the San Francisco Giants and he proved that he is one of the best starting pitchers in baseball. If the Mets can add him, they definitely need to think about doing that.

The Mets are going to have some interesting moves to make this offseason and it’ll be interesting to see what owner Steve Cohen does. Fans in the Queens are starting to get a little frustrated with the lack of playoff appearances for the Mets the past few seasons. When playing in New York City anything short of a world series title is automatically a failure. Fans will definitely be looking to see what moves the owner will make this offseason. Hopefully, they get the Mets to be World Series contenders.
