Cam Newton wasted no time in his return to the Carolina Panthers. He scored on his first play on a rushing touchdown and then followed that up by stepping in for starting quarterback P.J. Walker and throwing a short touchdown.

Newton made history in his season debut by scoring on both his first rush and first passing attempt. Thanks to those scores, Carolina took a 23-0 lead into halftime against the 8-1 Arizona Cardinals, who are playing without starting quarterback Kyler Murray.

Carolina turned to its former franchise star amid a woeful quarterback situation. The Panthers traded for Sam Darnold, who was ineffective and recently suffered a shoulder fracture that may be season-ending. Walker started in this game since Newton was signed during the week, but Newton's involvement so far and history as one of the greatest players in Carolina's history suggest that he may soon take over the starting spot.

With their impressive start over Arizona, the Panthers are positioned to get to a 5-5 record on the season and stay in the hunt for a Wild Card berth. Reinvigorating their quarterback situation couldn't have come at a better time. The NFC South is separated by only a few games and the Panthers may have found something by bringing Newton back, even though he isn't the superstar he once was.

Newton shouted “I'm back!” after his first score. He convinced everyone why he truly is with a historical second beginning with Carolina.
