After taking the whole planet by storm with the inescapable ‘Wannabe’ in 1996, the girls were determined to not be counted out and opted for a more mature and serious second single.
Crafted by production duo Absolute and written by the ladies, ‘Say’ signaled to the world that they meant business and weren’t planning on slowing down anytime soon.
Included on the ‘Spice’ album, it was their second #1 single on home soil, a Top 3 hit in the US, and it reached the Top 10 in most of the other charts that it entered.
To accompany the killer track, a sensational video was also released.
Inspired by movies ‘Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!´ and ‘Pulp Fiction,’ the visual showed the girls as a techno-warriors posse; an ensemble well-acquainted with martial arts and high-tech weapons. Adopting fictional identities throughout the clip, they served more sophisticated looks than in their debut. A move, which according to the quintet, attracted a more male demographic to the fandom.
Similar to the tune’s lyrics, the visual showcased the group’s sisterhood through thick and thin in face of adversity
Directed by Vaughan Arnell, it remains nothing short of iconic – even in 2021.
With this year marking the 25th anniversary of the Spice Girls, we can’t stress enough just how in awe we’ve always been of this band.
Against all odds, they delivered classic after classic, broke records established by more critically-acclaimed acts, became an inspiration and reference in various corners of Pop culture, and all-in-all have managed to keep their legacy intact.
Scary, Baby, Ginger, Posh and Sporty, we too promise we’ll always be there.
