“Look, we've got to decide as a Republican Party, are we going to talk about tomorrow?...or are we going to continue to look backwards?” Christie said during an appearance on ABC News’ “This Week.”

“And we can't continue to do that if we want to be a winning party. Fact is — and President Trump cannot continue to be a strong influence on the broad part of this party if, a year from now, he's still talking about 2020,” Christie added.

Christie — who is set to have his book published next week called "Republican Rescue: Saving the Party From Truth Deniers, Conspiracy Theorists, and the Dangerous Policies of Joe Biden” — has been a vocal critic of the former president’s baseless and debunked claims about the 2020 election.

Christie in recent weeks has begun pushing his own vision for the Republican Party. He said Trump should be talking more about the challenges and failures of the current administration to help bolster a possible red wave in the 2022 midterm elections.

“It will not work for him over time...because the American people move on,” Christie said. “They can't buy gasoline. Why isn't he talking about that? Why isn't he talking about the $29 toilet paper? Why isn't he talking about the failures of the administration that succeeded him?

“Then he could be a positive influence on the debate going forward. But all he wants to do is talk about himself and go backwards,” he went on.
