Lewis Hamilton came all the way back from last on the grid during Saturday's qualifying to win the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday, dramatically overtaking championship leader Max Verstappen in the race's late stages.

Hamilton posted the fastest time during Friday's session at Interlagos to clinch the top spot in Saturday's sprint race. However, the seven-time champion was disqualified and dropped to the back of the grid due to a technical infraction with his DRS system.

The Mercedes driver battled from 20th to the fifth spot in the sprint race but then served a five-place grid penalty for using a new engine and started Sunday's Grand Prix from 10th.

Red Bull's Verstappen finished second, reducing his championship lead to 14 points.

Hamilton attempted to overtake Verstappen on lap 48, but both drivers wound up off the road at Turn 4. The FIA stewards noted the incident but didn't investigate.

Hamilton eventually passed Verstappen on lap 59 and never looked back.

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas, who started the race from the pole position, finished third to round out the podium.

Meanwhile, Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez placed fourth, stealing the fastest-lap point toward the constructors' standings on the final lap.

Mercedes still holds an 11-point lead in pursuit of its eighth straight constructors' title.

The two Ferraris finished fifth and sixth, with Charles Leclerc leading Carlos Sainz.

Three races remain in the 2021 F1 season, with the Qatar GP up next weekend.
