True Blood and Party Down star Lizzy Caplan is set to take on an iconic role in her new TV series, which is an adaptation of psychological thriller movie Fatal Attraction.

Variety reports that Caplan will star in the series as Alex, a woman who becomes obsessed with her married lover after having a brief affair. The role was made famous by Glenn Close in the movie version, who picked up an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her portrayal of Alex.

The film also starred Michael Douglas as Dan, the object of Alex's affections, with the TV version of the character yet to be cast.

The series, which is being developed by Paramount Plus, has been described as "a deep-dive reimagining of the film that will explore the timeless themes of marriage and infidelity through the lens of modern attitudes towards strong women, personality disorders, and coercive control".

The series will be written and executive produced by Desperate Housewives writer Alexandra Cunningham, who is also showrunner for the series. Kevin J Hynes is also writing and executive producing, while Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey share executive producer credits too.

Nicole Clemens, president of Paramount Plus original scripted series, said of the announcement: "Alexandra brings an incredibly strong and nuanced point of view to a story that became a cultural phenomenon but has thus far only been told from the male gaze.

"Partnered with Kevin, they will bring the next explosive chapter of this story to a new generation with a balanced eye to the complexities of the human psyche."

Fatal Attraction will be the latest high-profile project for Caplan, who has previously starred in Castle Rock, Masters of Sex, Cloverfield and Mean Girls.

Caplan has previously opened up about her feelings on the explosion of available film and TV content over the past few years, calling it "a bizarre time for actors".

"We're in the midst of such enormous expansion, and such enormous change, that it can feel very overwhelming, and we're all trying to figure out what this new landscape really is, and how to navigate it.

"It feels like we're drowning in content as consumers, and yet, it's just as hard, if not harder, to find projects that you want to do, and that you can have a shot at actually getting."

Fatal Attraction will air on Paramount Plus.
