Kate Middleton And Prince William Almost Didn't Get Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge Title

It's customary for the Queen to bestow newlyweds royal a new title. Prince William and Kate Middleton, who tied the knot on April 29, 2011, were given the new title the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their big day.

The Queen usually gives away dukedom titles to the princes and their wives. For instance, Prince Charles is the Duke of Cornwall, Prince Andrew is the Duke of York and Prince Harry is the Duke of Sussex.

However, Prince William and Middleton nearly didn't get the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge title because it was previously offered to Prince Edward when he married his wife, Sophie, in 1999. Had Prince Edward said yes, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge title would not be available for Prince William and Middleton.

Prince Edward, the youngest son of the Queen and 14th in line to the throne, turned down the title to become the Earl of Wessex. He favored the title because he admired Colin Firth's fictional character in Shakespeare in Love, Lord Wessex, Elle reported.
