Colorado Rockies keeping as much of the band together as possible

Usually, when a team wins 74 games, the franchise looks to make changes. That is not the case with the Colorado Rockies however, as they have been working to keep as much of the roster together as possible. Not only have Antonio Senzatela and C.J. Cron signed extensions, but they have been working to keep Jon Gray in purple as well. At least trying to keep Gray makes sense.

The Rockies announced that another member of the 2021 roster will be returning for next year. Jhoulys Chacin is back, having signed a one year deal worth $1.25 million.

The 2021 campaign marked Chacin’s second stint in Colorado. He had been a part of the pitching staff from 2009 through 2014, serving mostly as a starter in that time. He did find some success, although a variety of injuries limited his production and led to his release prior to the 2015 season.

His second time with the Rockies was also successful. Although Chacin has moved to a bullpen role, he remained a productive part of the pitching staff. He posted a respectable 4.34 ERA and a 1.259 WHiP over his 64.1 innings, striking out 47 batters with 28 walks. Those numbers are certainly decent for a middle reliever, especially one in Colorado.

But Chacin’s signing also has to make one wonder what the plan is for the Rockies. Trevor Story is not coming back – he has made that clear. Despite their attempts to keep Gray, he is generating plenty of interest in free agency and may not return. Those are two key pieces for a team that is just not that good to begin with.

Nonetheless, the Rockies are seemingly determined to keep as much of this roster together as possible. They had been under the delusion that they could contend at the start of last season and literally did nothing at the trade deadline, so this should not be much of a surprise. Maybe one day, they will accept the reality of their situation and sign free agents from outside the organization. But today is not that day.
