Cars get updated on regular schedules, usually five to seven years separates a generation, though there are some exceptions. In the middle of that period most vehicles get midcycle update. It's midcycle time for the Toyota Camry, with the latest generation debuting in 2018.

Toyota didn't need to do a ton to this car, as it's better than it ever has been, and it's still the number one selling passenger car for the 20th consecutive year. It was the number one vehicle in the US overall for a time, but that crown has been taken by the crossover craze. It now offers 18 combinations between powertrain and drive layout, that's Porsche Panamera levels of choice.

For the 2022 model year -- a little long for a midcycle - the ubiquitous sedan gains a new two-tone color, a new standard color and some extra convenience features like standard dual-zone climate control and heated side mirrors on LE and SE models. A new SE Nightshade Hybrid model also premieres (it was already available on the non-hybrid). It comes with blacked-out door handles, mirror caps, shark fin antenna and 18-inch wheels.

The color Ice Edge spreads out from the TRD model to the rest of the line, replacing Galactic Aqua. The TRD instead gets a black-roof, two-tone Cavalry Blue scheme. Those two-tone looks are offered in the sportier XSE grades while the solo colors stay on the more luxurious XLE trims. Other two-tone options include Celestial Silver Metallic, Wind Chill Pearl and Supersonic Red.

Inside the 2022 Camry comes with either a 7- or 9-inch touchscreen display, and with an available 7-inch driver cluster. Top XLE and XSE models additionally get a 10-inch color head-up display. The seats have a new design and inlays can be had in dark wood or patterned metal. The dual-zone climate control is now standard on the gasoline, four-cylinder models for the first time.

Engine choices are the same, meaning a 3.5-liter V6 making 301 hp, a 2.5-liter four with 203 hp and the hybrid four delivering 208 total between motor and engine. The gas-powered cars get an eight-speed automatic; the hybrid gets a CVT. Prices are close to last year, within a few hundred bucks. The SE Nightshade starts at $27,535 with the four-cylinder, all-wheel drive is $1,400 more. The most-expensive modes are the V6 TRD at $32,360 (still a deal) and the XLE Hybrid at $32,270.
