Clemson football: South Carolina takes subtle shot at Clemson as rivalry game inches closer

The rivalry between Clemson football fans and South Carolina fans is beginning to heat up as we’re just a couple of weeks away from the annual Palmetto Bowl being renewed.

Clemson and South Carolina had played every single season for 111 years straight until the SEC ruined the rivalry’s streak by chickening out on non-conference games back in 2020. Despite Clemson and South Carolina being just up the road from one another, the rivalry matchup did not take place because of the SEC’s decision.

Now, nearly two years removed from the last time the two teams matched up on the gridiron, the rivalry is about to be renewed in a big way.

The official Twitter account of Gamecock Athletics is certainly thinking about it.

On Thursday, the account posted a tweet with a subtle shot directed at Clemson. It pointed out that the next three games for the Gamecocks would be against teams with ‘Tigers’ as their mascots. For Missouri and Auburn, the Tweet used the Tiger emoji. For Clemson, however, the post showed a different emoji, one resembling a cat rather than a Tiger.

As bad as this season has been for Clemson, the truth is that the Tigers are still having a season that Gamecock fans would dream of.

Clemson is bowl eligible— something the Gamecocks are in danger of missing out on– and the Tigers own a six-game winning streak in the series currently.

If the Tigers were to win this one, they’d improve to seven-straight over the Gamecocks and that would tie the record for the longest win streak in the series’ history, first accomplished by Clemson in 1934-1940.

Gamecocks are looking up right now after the big win over Florida and they’re feeling good because of the off-year we’ve seen from Dabo Swinney and Co., but we wouldn’t recommend they get too excited just yet.

Right now, we’d give them a better chance of beating either of the other Tigers– Missouri or Auburn– left on the schedule versus pulling off a win over their in-state rivals.
