Midway through the second, Alex Ovechkin scored for the Capitals to tie the game.
In the second, Garnet Hathaway scored a pair of goals in a seven-minute stretch to give Washington a 3-1 lead.
Less than a minute after Hathaway's second goal, Kuraly scored for a second time to cut the Capitals' lead to 3-2.
Just 22 seconds later the Blue Jackets tied the game when Gustav Nyquist scored his second goal of the season.
With the teams still tied 3-3, Washington's Conor Sheary scored with less than two minutes remaining in the contest to give the Capitals a 4-3 victory.
The Blue Jackets will return to the ice Saturday at 7 p.m. against the New York Rangers inside Nationwide Arena.
