A week after Seattle University launched an investigation into it's men's basketball program, head coach Jim Hayford has resigned from his post. This resignation comes at the heels of multiple allegations of him using derogatory racial slurs around his players.
Seattle University's athletic director Shaney Fink issued a statement after Hayford's resignation (via TMZ):
“‘It is clear to me that coach Hayford is no longer able to effectively lead this team. The top priority within the Athletic Department is, and always will be, to support the wellbeing and success of our student athletes — in and out of the classroom and in their chosen sport.'”
“Fink continued, ‘We are committed to advancing an athletic community that is inclusively excellent. We will take additional steps to ensure any concerns within the program are addressed and that all our student athletes are seen, heard, and supported.'”
Seattle University initially made headlines last week as reports have surfaced about Hayford (who is white) and his use of derogatory slurs around his players. Jeff Goodman reported this interaction between the ex-coach and his players, which was the final straw for the Redhawks players.
“A Black player used the word during Thursday’s scrimmage, and it was then called into question by one of the officials. Hayford then repeated the word in an effort to curtail its use. ‘Did you say the N-word?’ Hayford said.”
Jim Hayford stepped in as the coach of Seattle University's men's basketball program in 2017. He has had decent success with the program, earning a 65 – 55 win-loss record with the roster. Before coaching in Seattle University, he also had stops in Eastern Washington, Whitworth, and Sioux Falls.
