BHN Puck Links: Emotional Bruins/Oilers Night Remembering Colby Cave

There’s zero doubt that the last 19 months have been unimaginably difficult for Emily Cave, the widow of Boston Bruins forward Colby Cave.

Her hockey-playing husband died suddenly and unexpectedly from a brain bleed at just 25 years old, and it happened amidst COVID-19 where people were separated, secluded and isolated to keep the virus from spreading.

There was so much personal love and support that she missed out on from her hockey family when it was limited to phone calls, text messages and social media posts of care and compassion. So it was a big night for Emily Cave, her late husband and the Colby Cave Memorial Fund on Thursday night when she dropped the ceremonial first puck in Colby’s honor for the Bruins/Oilers game at TD Garden while the Bruins Foundation donated the money from their 50/50 puck raffle total toward Colby’s charity.

There were emotional hugs from Patrice Bergeron and Connor McDavid, the captains of the two teams that Cave played for at the NHL level, and a wellspring of emotion prior to Thursday’s 5-3 loss to the Oilers on the ice at TD Garden.

It was clearly overwhelming to Emily, to say the least, but in a way that helped her get some of the personal support that COVID-19 made impossible for most of the last two years. Perhaps it was embodied best in her Instagram story post about a hug she shared with Brad Marchand following the puck drop where she told the Bruins winger that “[Cave] loved you so much.”

It’s a shame that Emily missed that part of the grieving process for so long due to COVID, but hopefully Thursday night allowed her a little of the necessary closure. There’s no doubt she’ll continue her courageous work spearheading the Colby Cave Memorial Fund and Colby’s Kids helping underprivileged families play hockey out in Western Canada.
