Andy Cohen supports Sarah Jessica Parker defending herself against misogyny: 'She's so right'
Sarah Jessica Parker can defend herself, but regardless, she has Andy Cohen's support.
Cohen and Parker have been the best of friends for close to 20 years. Paparazzi captured photos while they were having lunch this summer, causing a flood of misogynistic commentary about SJP's naturally gray hair.
Parker strongly addressed the topic—though she was referencing the backlash she and her Sex and the City co-stars are facing amid filming HBO Max revival series And Just Like That...—in a Vogue profile published Sunday (Nov. 7):
"There’s so much misogynist chatter in response to us that would never. Happen. About. A. Man. ‘Gray hair gray hair gray hair. Does she have gray hair?’ I’m sitting with Andy Cohen, and he has a full head of gray hair, and he’s exquisite. Why is it okay for him? I don’t know what to tell you people! Especially on social media. Everyone has something to say. ‘She has too many wrinkles, she doesn’t have enough wrinkles.’ It almost feels as if people don’t want us to be perfectly okay with where we are, as if they almost enjoy us being pained by who we are today, whether we choose to age naturally and not look perfect, or whether you do something if that makes you feel better. I know what I look like. I have no choice. What am I going to do about it? Stop aging? Disappear?"
Cohen echoed her sentiment on The Drew Barrymore Show this week:
"It was so misogynistic, and she was so right," Cohen said. "And I think that this new Sex and the City iteration And Just Like That... is gonna be quite revolutionary because from I understand, it's gonna show the women living vibrantly in their 50s and at this stage in their lives. [Parker]'s not gonna be running around in a tutu and high heels. They're going to be living in their 50s as beautiful women, and I think it's gonna be a wonderful message."
"I grew up in an industry that was so about looks," Barrymore added, eventually feeling so passionately she leapt out of her chair. "If I had heard one more person talk about how after 30, it's over. I just was like, this is so toxic! And women who were like, 'I'm afraid to get old. I've gotta keep it tight and get on the treadmill every day and eat a crumb!' I was like, 'You're miserable! This is such [expletive]! I hate it! I'm not gonna live my life according to these screwed up values!' Let her eat lunch! Women, go grey! Call your mother! I am just sick of it!"
