Apple has often been criticized for the 15-30% cut it takes from subscriptions done through its App Store payment system. Some companies like Spotify and Netflix have avoided paying the commission fees by removing the option to subscribe through their iOS apps. Users would have to pay through the website, and then the premium privileges would get reflected on the iOS client. After three years of abandoning the App Store payment system on its main app, Netflix has now included the option to subscribe directly through the newly released games on iOS.

According to Bloomberg, Netflix now allows iOS users to subscribe directly through its newly released games. The popular streaming service removed the option from its main app back in 2018, and users can only sign in to the app after creating an account on the web. A banner states that they apologize for the hassle, but signing up through the app is not possible. However, the banner doesn't reference the website because Apple's guidelines ban developers from doing so. As such, users have to figure the process out by themselves.

It's unclear why Netflix has decided to implement this payment method in its games only. There have been some tensions between the streaming giant and Apple in the past, like not supporting the Apple TV app. But it seems like the two companies could be on slightly better terms now. It is yet to be seen whether Netflix will eventually reimplement IAPs on its main iOS app or not.

Earlier this month, the streaming service started rolling out its games on Android worldwide. iOS users can now finally play the titles, too. Netflix game access is included with the existing subscription at no additional cost. The games are available on the App Store and have an in-app purchase option for Netflix's basic plan. Current subscribers can just log in and start playing.

Update (11/19/2021 @ 07:40 ET): A previous version of this article erroneously mentioned that IAPs are brought back on the main iOS app. Actually, they are present on the newly released games only. The article has been amended. We regret the error.
