Since the summer transfer window, the long-term future of Robert Lewandowski at Bayern Munich has been subject to a lot of speculation. The Polish striker was linked with a transfer to Premier League, while one report said that Real Madrid remains a dream destination for the forward.

Despite all the speculation, Lewandowski ended up staying in Bavaria. The Polish striker has enjoyed terrific output in the final third during the first quarter of the season. He currently has 23 goals across all competitions, which is an incredible output since there are so many games left in this campaign.

As the season progresses, there will be more attention towards Lewandowski’s contract situation at Die Roten. The Polish striker currently has just over 18 months left on his current deal. The latest update from Germany on his contract renewal will be music to the ears of the Bavarian faithful.

According to Sport1’s Florian Plettenberg, Die Roten is relaxed about the contract situation of Lewandowski. The Bavarian club is expected to begin talks with the Polish striker for a new deal in 2022. The contract renewal will also depend on the availability of other strikers in the market.

Earlier in the season, one report in Germany insisted that Lewandowski is waiting for the club to open contract talks with him. After getting the golden boot award for last season, the Polish striker did hint towards staying longer in Bavaria. Previously, Lewandowski has also suggested that he is very much settled in Bavaria and can consider ending his career at Rekordmeister.

Despite Lewandowski showing no signs of decline, Die Roten will have to start preparing a succession plan for him since he will turn 34 next season. The club’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic publicly expressed interest in Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland. However, it remains to be seen whether Rekordmeister is ready to stretch their financial resources to sign the Norwegian striker.

Apart from Haaland, Bayern has also been lately linked with Victor Osimhen and Dusan Vlahovic. In case any of these young strikers are pursued next summer, then a new deal for Lewandowski is unlikely to materialize.

Yes, it is crucial for Rekordmeister to always prioritize long-term plans for the squad. However, they can surely make an exception for Lewandowski. He is currently the best number nine in the world. Considering his impeccable fitness record, the Polish striker is likely to keep scoring for fun for at least the next two to three years. Die Roten should keep hold of him and bring a forward that can learn the trade from him and develop into a top striker who can eventually succeed him.
