EWEB is proposing an additional water treatment plant in the Willamette River as a back-up resource.
Currently, the McKenzie River Plant is Eugene's single source for drinking water.
The new location up for consideration is off of McVay Highway and Franklin Boulevard.
Nothing is set in stone just yet.
Commissioners from the utility company toured the site Wednesday afternoon.
"We're still exploring all of the land use and permit needs," said EWEB Communications Supervisor Jennifer Connors. "We have a lot to do with the City of Springfield on that, a lot of decisions to make. The size of the plant, how the water will be treated, funding for the project. So it's all in the very preliminary stages."
Connors says out of the 20 largest cities in the Pacific Northwest, Eugene is the only city to have a single source for drinking water.
