Scott Wagner, a former York County state senator and 2018 Republican gubernatorial nominee, this spring was involved in a head-on crash in Maryland that left an elderly man seriously injured.
According to a report first published by The York Daily Record citing a lawsuit, Wagner fell asleep at the wheel last spring, crossed over the center line and hit a car head-on in Maryland.
Wagner, 66, was driving a 2019 Ford F-150 westbound before 3:30 p.m. on May 8 on St. Michaels Road near Solitude Road in Talbot County, The York Daily Record reports. He crashed into a 2002 Toyota Avalon, police said, that Harold Morley was driving eastbound.
According to Maryland State Police, the crash happened less than 3 miles from Wagner’s home.
Morley, 89, of St. Michaels, Maryland, was seriously hurt in the crash, according to the YDR. He was taken to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton, police said, and later flown to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland.
According to the report, Wagner broke his right arm in the crash. Police did not detect any substance use on Wagner nor test him for drugs or alcohol.
Wagner was cited with failure to drive on the right half of the roadway and negligent driving. Talbot County District Judge Karen R. Ketterman later granted a motion for judgment of acquittal at trial on Sept. 28, the YDR reports.
Morley has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland against Wagner and KBS Inc., a hauling company that he bought in 2005, the story says.
Wagner in 2018 mounted an unsuccessful bid to unseat Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf in the gubernatorial race. That came four years after he became the first person ever elected to the Pa. Senate through a write-in campaign.
Wagner was not reached for comment.
