Lunar and solar eclipses: Their meaning spiritually and in astrology

Destiny calls your name. Will you answer? Your life will never be the same again.

Whether or not you’re ready, the universe has chosen: it’s time for rapid change.

Since the dawn of mankind, people have looked up to the sky and witnessed wondrous and terrifying events — such as solar and lunar eclipses. These cosmic events were often seen as harbingers of dramatic natural and social events — climate catastrophes, plagues, civil uprisings, or even the rise or fall of empires.

We still experience eclipses — and for a brief period, the Sun disappears in the sky, turning day to night, or the Moon becomes blood red before our eyes. Ancient people often felt that they were witnessing the eye of an angry god. To this day, we can see that major events happen near eclipses — in our lives and in the world, at large.

What is an eclipse?

An eclipse is a powerful interaction between the Earth, the Moon and the Sun. We usually have four to six eclipses a year, and they take place on New Moons or Full Moons and are three times more powerful than a regular New Moon or Full Moon. Eclipses always arrive in pairs, usually with one followed by the other. Once they visit, they tend to appear again about every six months on average.

What is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse appears when the Moon stands between the Sun and the Earth, cutting off the light of the Sun from our perspective. A solar eclipse is a powerful lunation that takes place on a New Moon. It is three times more potent than a New Moon and often brings exciting new beginnings, fresh starts and new chapters.

What is a lunar eclipse?

A lunar eclipse arrives when the Earth stands between the Moon and the Sun. This cuts off the light of the Sun from the Moon. During these events, the Moon may become red, orange, brown or disappear entirely. A lunar eclipse is a very intense lunation that takes place on a Full Moon. It is three times more potent than a regular Full Moon and often brings major endings, turning points, revelations and culminations.

How do eclipses affect me spiritually?

Change is scary. As human beings, we do not like change. But that’s the reason eclipses are so powerful and transformative. Eclipses mark major life events that we often remember forever.

However, they always bring the unexpected and something you could not have planned for — something monumental that changes your life forever. During these times, something ends and another begins. Eclipses tend to bring the happiest and most heartbreaking of moments — promotions, triumphs, breakdowns, breakthroughs, marriages, divorces, business launches, childbirth, relocation, meeting the love of your life, or even the arrival or death of a pet. Expect shocking meetings and partings.

The reason the universe does this is to help us to evolve — even if the process is intense.

Spiritually, solar eclipses tend to be more exciting, friendly and joyous, as we embark on a vibrant new path and pursue fresh horizons. Lunar eclipses are immensely emotional and cause things to break down that are not working and cause us to face the truth about underlying feelings, fears and our shadow selves. We must examine our place in the world and our paths going forward.

My best spiritual advice during these times is to surrender to the flow of the universe and accept that change has come. It is not the best time to make major life choices or be impulsive, as you do not have all of the information just yet. Eclipses bring news in waves — or acts, as I say — that take some time to play out. That’s why even if we undergo a crisis or heartbreak, it could actually be redirecting us to the best and brightest experiences still to come.

Last to mention is that because our energy tends to be heightened and a bit erratic, ritual manifestation or energy work is not ideal during these times. Instead, focus on listening to the universe and trusting your intuition. Meditate. Journal. Take care of your physical and mental health.

How do eclipses affect me astrologically?

By their very nature, eclipses bring a crisis event into our lives. These are often “destined” or “karmic” situations that were meant to happen. Depending on where they fall in your birth chart or for your zodiac sign, you will often see a massive change in an area of your life. As mentioned before, solar eclipses bring you destined new beginnings and opportunities, whereas lunar eclipses bring fated endings, breakdowns or breakthroughs.

As we face a crisis eclipse moment, we often are pushed out of our comfort zones and feel that our lives are changing before our very eyes. Astrologically, eclipses open and close chapters so that we are never in the same place for too long.

Astrologically, eclipses come in a pair of zodiac signs for about 18 to 24 months until they have completed this cycle. For instance, eclipses will always take place in the following polarities: Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, Gemini-Sagittarius, Cancer-Capricorn, Leo-Aquarius and Virgo-Pisces. Once a cycle in a pair of signs finishes, it will return again in roughly seven to eight years. However, a complete cycle takes 19 years — and the eclipses will return to the same degree and sign roughly 19 years apart from each other. That is why it’s helpful to reflect back 19 years (if you’re old enough) and you’ll likely see similar themes and patterns arrive once again.

Eclipses set up themes for the coming six months. We can also start to feel them approaching in the month before they arrive—and they can still bring their news in the following weeks after it. However, most people receive news of an eclipse in the week that surrounds it. From an astrological point of view, the eclipse will always be colored by the planetary aspects it makes at the time of the lunation—so you can’t ever say whether or not it is a “good eclipse” or “bad eclipse” without consulting an astrologer and seeing how it interacts with the sky at that point in time.
