Children across southeast Iowa are now getting the COVID-19 vaccine.
Monday morning, the Wapello County Public Health Department administered its first pediatric COVID vaccine.
The Food and Drug Administration approved Pfizer's vaccine for children emergency use authorization at the end of October. This vaccine is for children between the ages of 5 through 11 and is a third of the dose an adult would get.
I have been giving children vaccines all my life," said Wapello County Public Health Clinical Director Lynelle Diers. "The COVID-19 vaccines are no different, it is just new."
Diers added that this week's turn out started off slow. But more and more parents have been showing up to get their kids vaccinated.
Parents in Bloomfield also have an opportunity to get their child vaccinated. Davis County Elementary School will be holding a vaccination clinic on Thursday.
All children must be five years or older. It will be taking place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Click here to find the application.
