Nine purebred Australian shepherd puppies are looking for new homes at MSPCA-Angell after their owner became overwhelmed by their care. The 5-month-old puppies are described by the MSPCA as very adoptable. “The puppies’ owner just needed our assistance in finding new homes for them,” said Mike Keiley, director of adoption centers and programs at the MSPCA-Angell.The American Kennel Club describes the Australian shepherd as a “lean, tough ranch dog.”“These puppies have been relatively sheltered so we’ll be looking for adopters willing to commit to their early socialization needs,” he added. Two adult Australian shepherds will be spayed and neutered and returned to the owner’s home this week, the MSPCA said. Because they are herding dogs, Australian shepherds are highly active and alert and require adopters committed to exercising them regularly. “Hikers, runners and walkers make excellent companions for dogs such as these,” said Keiley, who also said the adoption centers will prioritize adopters who are committed to the dogs’ ongoing training. Would-be adopters can apply online at mspca.org/bostonadoptioninquiry.“Anyone with experience owning herding breeds would be the ideal adopter,” Keiley said. The MSPCA said it has not seen dogs of this breed surrendered in such numbers in at least the last 10 years.
