To further address concerns and potential ideas for the future, the city of Arapahoe has called a community meeting in regards to the closure of its local nursing home.
Last week, Benita Adams found out the assisted living facility her aunt is in is closing at the end of the year.
“They told us we only had 60 days and we had to move her,” said Adams.
By state law, Good Samaritan is only required to give a 60 day notice to families and residents, however, Adams said the situation is extremely frustrating.
“My blood pressure’s been up, trying to figure out, scramble to see where I can put her,” said Adams.
Arapahoe Mayor John E. Koller said the closure announcement came as a surprise.
“It's shocking. This is the first time we had any indication that it was going to happen and not very good,” said Koller.
Over 100 people attended tonight’s meeting. Koller felt it was important to share any and all information with the community.
“Give the community an opportunity to ask questions, gain a little information on what is happening,” said Koller.
At this time, Koller said nothing is for certain. However, Ron Ross said there may be an opportunity to keep doors open, if the city takes over the facility.
“They are asking for some leeway from the CEO and the Board of Good Samaritan to say we’d like to have an opportunity to run the nursing home ourselves,” said Ross.
However, there are rumors of a non-compete agreement which would prevent the future sale of the building and equipment. Koller said it remains unclear whether or not this will be an issue.
“The information we’re getting from Good Sam is somewhat unclear. It changes daily. We’re trying to get more clarity on that,” said Koller.
For those with loved ones in the home, waiting is not an option. Adams said she is fortunate to have found a nearby home in Cambridge, but the situation is not ideal.
“If she gets sick, I have to go over there,” said Adams.
It was decided at the meeting a letter will be written to Good Samaritan asking for assistance.
