Fire at Mall of Georgia

BUFORD — Gwinnett County firefighters are on the scene at Mall of Georgia after a fire was reported there this evening.

A caller to 9-1-1 reported seeing flames near the back of RUE 21 with shoppers trying to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers.

Upon arrival, there was an active alarm and the mall was being evacuated. Firefighters proceeded to recon the area and found a clothing rack on fire and smoke filling the main mall corridor.

They were able to extinguish the fire with two pressurized water extinguishers and there was no extension beyond the area of origin. Firefighters used an electric fan to remove smoke from the store.

One mall security guard was evaluated for possible smoke inhalation but they declined any treatment.

A fire investigator is on scene for cause determination. The mall is still evacuated and the Gwinnett County Police Dept. is at the scene assisting with crowd control.
