Few people know Mike McGlinchey as well as his former offensive line partner and friend, Joe Staley, who has since switched over to the media side of things. On Monday, Staley joined KNBR, as he does each week.

But after breaking down the 49ers’ loss and discussing some of what can or must be improved, Staley was dealt a bombshell. About midway through the interview, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that McGlinchey had suffered a torn quadricep and would be done for the season.

KNBR’s John Lund broke the news to Staley, who reacted live. He said he talked to McGlinchey Sunday night, and that McGlinchey was actually optimistic about the injury outlook before the results of the MRI were returned.

“Oh man, I talked to him last night and he was pretty optimistic on it,” Staley said. “That’s a huge blow. I think Mike was playing the best football of his career to this point… It’s gonna be a huge, huge loss with McGlinchey, I think for the offensive line.”

Staley continued to point out how the Arizona Cardinals started targeting the right side of the 49ers’ offensive line in Daniel Brunskill and Tom Compton with Chandler Jones and Markus Golden.
