At nearly the halfway point of the season, Patterson is already 10 receiving yards away from his career season high (which he set back during his rookie year). He has 278 rushing yards on 73 carries with two touchdowns and 459 receiving yards and five scores.

With 1,064, Patterson ranks third in the NFL in all-purpose yards behind Jonathan Taylor (1,114) and Derrick Henry (1,091). Four of his career top-10 performances in receiving yards have come this season with the Falcons, including No. 2 on his career list with 126 yards on six catches against the Saints on Sunday,

Falcons head coach Arthur Smith has seemingly found the right formula that has led to Patterson being one of the biggest surprises around the NFL this year.

"We're talking about a guy that's been in the league for almost a decade and has been with a bunch of different teams with good offensive coordinators... that didn't find ways to use him like this," Andy Bunker said. "If you're pointing to one thing that tells you what Arthur Smith is as an offensive mind is the code that he's cracked with Patterson that other people haven't been able to."
