(SportsRadio 610) - Astros third baseman Alex Bregman underwent surgery on his right wrist Monday in Houston, the team announced.

Bregman earlier in the day posted a photo on his Instagram stories, smiling, wearing a cast and giving a thumbs up after the surgery.

"All went good," Bregman wrote. "💪 again soon."

Bregman played in 91 games this season, often plagued by injuries to his squad and hamstring. His decline from the 2019 season, when he was the American League MVP runner-up, continued into 2021. Bregman slashed .270/.355/.422 this past season. He posted a .242/.350/.451 slash line over 42 games in the abbreviated 2020 season (also plagued by hamstring injuries), compared to his .296/.423/.592 line in '19.

The Astros star third baseman told Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports and The Athletic that he felt two years of his prime is wasted by injuries.

When asked about it last week after the Astros lost the World Series to the Atlanta Braves in six games, Bregman did not make excuses.

Bregman is expected to be ready for spring training in 2022. The Astros will still be competitive next season, even if they lose Justin Verlander and Carlos Correa. But they absolutely need Bregman healthy and performing closer to his 2019 form.
