Duke Sweeps Wake Forest Friday

DURHAM - The Duke volleyball team swept Wake Forest, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-21) Friday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium. 

With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 14-10 (5-8 ACC) as the Demon Deacons drop to 13-12 (4-10 ACC). 

The Blue Devils were led by senior Ade Owokoniran with 14 kills and just one error on 28 attempts to hit .464 percent to pace an offense that hit .250 for the match. Setter Camille Nazor dished 27 assists while libero Mackenzie Cole and Gracie Johnson each tallied 10 digs for the defense. At the net, Lizzie Fleming notched a season-high 10 blocks, followed by Owokoniran and Rachel Richardson with four each. Johnson also matched her career high in aces with four while Cole had three. 

The Blue Devils got off to a hot start with a .281 hitting percentage with 12 kills and just two errors as Owokoniran jumped out with four early kills. Duke also established its block early with five blocks to limit Wake Forest to a .075 clip in the opening frame. 

Duke carried its momentum into the second set as Owokoniran and Richardson tallied five kills each as Duke hit .333 percent as a team. Fleming added four blocks and Johnson notched two aces to help keep the Demon Deacons on their heels. 

Fleming continued to be a dominant presence at the net in the final set with four blocks and helped control the tempo as the Demon Deacons couldn't find an answer offensively with a .051 hitting percentage. Georgia Stavrinides added three kills to post a .429 to help spearhead Duke to victory. 

Wake Forest was led by Kamryn Malloy with 12 kills while libero Kalani Whillock added 17 digs. 

Duke will close out the weekend Sunday at 1 p.m., against Virginia Tech.
