8-Bit Christmas Trailer Shows How Far ’80s Kids Would Go For a Nintendo

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the official 8-Bit Christmas trailer for the forthcoming coming-of-age comedy film, starring Neil Patrick Harris and Winslow Fegley. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters and on HBO Max on November 24.

The video features Harris’ character Jake Doyle as he recounts an unforgettable Christmas memory from his childhood to his daughter. It highlights the adventures of an 11-year-old Jake as he embarks on an important mission of getting his ultimate Christmas gift, a Nintendo Entertainment System.

8-Bit Christmas is directed by Michael Dowse from a screenplay by Kevin Jakubowski, based on his book of the same name. The holiday film stars Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Winslow Fegley (Nightbooks), June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie), David Cross (Pitch Perfect 2), and Steve Zahn (The White Lotus).

“The film is a humorous and heartfelt look back at the adventures of childhood,” reads the synopsis. “Set in suburban Chicago in the late 1980s, the story centers on ten-year-old Jake Doyle’s herculean quest to get the latest and greatest video game system for Christmas.”

8-Bit Christmas is a production by New Line Cinema, HBO Max, and Star Thrower Entertainment. It is produced by Tim White, Trevor White, Allan Mandelbaum, Jonathan Sadowski, and Nick Nantell, with Nikki Ramey, Richard Brener, Celia Khong, Kevin Jakubowski, and Whitney Brown serving as executive producers.
