March 14: Rizzo most likely 1B option for Yanks?
Rizzo now seems to be the most realistic first-base option for the Yankees, reports MLB Network insider Jon Heyman.

While the Yanks have not been reported to be "out" on free-agent first baseman Freddie Freeman, Heyman noted Monday morning that New York was feeling "pessimistic" about its chances of acquiring the 2020 NL MVP. The Yanks also considered Matt Olson but balked at the A's asking price -- per Heyman, Oakland asked for Yankees' top prospect Anthony Volpe and more -- before the team dealt the slugger to the Braves on Monday.

Heyman reported Sunday night that the Yankees believed the Freeman sweepstakes would come down to the Braves and Dodgers. It's possible New York will re-engage with Freeman's camp now that Atlanta is seemingly out of the mix after acquiring Olson, but Freeman is expected to be far more expensive than Rizzo.

March 10: Cubs reunion possible for Rizzo?
There are two star first basemen on the free-agent market: Rizzo and Freddie Freeman. Where the one signs could impact the other. Rizzo re-signing with the Yankees, who traded for him last July, is definitely on the table; there were even reports earlier this offseason that Rizzo wants to stay in pinstripes. Or, if the Braves don't bring back Freddie Freeman, they could pivot to Rizzo instead, as The Athletic's David O'Brien (subscription required) suggested. Chicago baseball radio analyst Bruce Levine of 670 The Score even reported recently that a reunion between Rizzo and the Cubs is possible on a shorter-term deal.
