Iowa State Senator Joe Bolkcom says he will not seek re-election in 2022.
Bolkcom is currently serving his sixth term in the Iowa Senate.
He represents Iowa City, University Heights, East Lucas Township and the city of Hills. He previously served for six years on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.
In a video Bolkcom said, "I’m proud to have been part of the progressive legislative Democratic majority from 2007 to 2010 and the one vote Iowa Senate Democratic majority from 2011 to 2016. When I first ran for the Iowa Senate in 1998, Republicans controlled all of Iowa’s state government. During that election, then candidate for governor Tom Vilsack told voters that it was “time to rotate the crops.” Iowa voters agreed, and put Iowa on a new, more progressive course."
Bolkcom says he will continue to serve his constituents during the remainder of his term.
Senator Bolkcom helped found and direct two senior citizen advocacy organizations fighting for lower health care cost for seniors in Iowa and Illinois. He has also been active in state and local environmental protection efforts.
