Two Spirit Lake Republicans Seek To Replace Former State Senator Zach Whiting

Northwest Iowa — A pair of Spirit Lake Republicans have announced their intentions to run for the Iowa Senate District 1 seat that was vacated over the weekend by the resignation of former Senator Zach Whiting.

Spirit Lake Entrepreneur Barb Clayton says she had been approached previously approached about running, but never gave it serious consideration until Whiting announced his resignation last week.

Clayton has been a Dickinson County resident since 1996, and says her campaign platform will focus on rights that have been eroded by government overreach.

In addition to Clayton, Spirit Lake Republican Dave Rowley has announced his candidacy to seek the vacated Iowa Senate District 1 seat.

Rowley says he wants to make sure that northwest Iowa continues to have a strong voice in the Iowa Senate.

A special election date will be set by Governor Kim Reynolds, and the winner of that election would serve the remaining year of Whiting’s term. They seat would be up for election for a full four-year term in 2022.

The seat opened up when former Senator Zach Whiting, of Spirit Lake, resigned from the Iowa Senate effective at noon this past Saturday.
