Jay-Z, Kid Cudi and All the Artists Featured on 'The Harder They Fall' Soundtrack

The Harder They Fall rides onto Netflix on Wednesday November 3 with the movie's producer Jay-Z creating two original songs for the stellar soundtrack.

The Netflix original movie is a gritty, stylized Western with a predominantly African American cast featuring the likes of Regina King, Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors and LaKeith Stanfield. British musician Jeymes Samuel (The Bullitts) wrote and directed The Harder They Fall in what is his feature-filmmaking debut.

The movie's story of love and revenge in the old West will grab the attention of viewers but the impressive soundtrack heightens the movie further. Ahead of its release on the streaming platform, Netflix released the official motion picture soundtrack.

Artists featuring on The Harder They Fall (The Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Not your typical Western movie soundtrack, The Harder They Fall (The Motion Picture Soundtrack) plays more like a rap album with skits breaking up the tracks which are performed by some of the world's biggest artists.

The album opens with a skit which is a clip from the movie, with actors Edi Gathegi and R.J. Cyler talking. Later on another features LaKeith Stanfield and Regina King, with another featuring Zazie Beetz and Jonathan Majors.

Jeymes Samuel on working with Jay-Z

The Harder They Fall premiered at the BFI London Film Festival, where writer and director Jeymes Samuel spoke to Newsweek about working with Jay-Z (credited as Shawn Carter) on the music for the movie.

He said: "Working with Jay is like breathing. He's such a generous collaborator but also, interestingly about Jay, he's super film-literate. We'd work on the story for the movie just as much as we'd work on the music at times.

"He's more than music, he's a real film fan and knowledgeable about Westerns," Samuel said. This wasn't the first time they'd collaborated as Samuel, under his stage name The Bullitts, also contributed music to the film The Great Gatsby in 2013.

In that time working together, Samuel has noticed one peculiar habit of Jay-Z's: "He doesn't use a pen. We wrote the title track for the film and on the last verse I was writing using a pen and he stores all the info in his head. When we wrote a verse for the song, he has his eyes closed, he listens, says he's got it."

Samuel continued, "It's awesome working with Jay-Z, it's just like breathing, in both film and music."

The Harder They Fall (The Motion Picture Soundtrack) is available to buy, stream and download now.
