Syracuse, N.Y. -- Three-star defensive end Q’yaeir Price announced on Monday that he has decommitted from Syracuse and is reopening his recruitment.

He was the highest-rated verbal commitment in Syracuse’s Class of 2022.

In his announcement on Twitter he thanked Syracuse’s coaches for recruiting him and said his decision came after consultation with his coaches and family. He is a defensive end at DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne, New Jersey.

Price did not immediately return a request for comment.

His high school head coach Nicholas Campanile is part of a well-established coaching family in New Jersey that includes Nunzio Campanile, a tight ends coach at Rutgers, and Anthony Campanile, an assistant coach with the Miami Dolphins.

Price is ranked as the No. 675 recruit in the Class of 2022, the No. 100 defensive end and the No. 10 player in New Jersey by 247Sports. Syracuse has two recruits ranked in 247Sports’ Top-1,000 players, wide receiver Donovan Brown and defensive back Dom Foster.

Price’s decommitment leaves Syracuse with 10 verbal commits in its Class of 2022, which 247Sports ranks No. 13 of 14 teams in the ACC and No. 74 in the country.

Price initially committed to Syracuse in July.

Since then, Syracuse has shown improvement in its on-field product. The Orange has followed last year’s one-win campaign with a 5-4 start this season, winning two consecutive games to move within one game of bowl eligibility.

The Orange defense was impressive last week holding Boston College to six points with defensive end Cody Roscoe tied for sixth in the country with eight sacks this season.

Syracuse will need to replace much of that defensive line unit with Roscoe, Kingsley Jonathan, Josh Black and McKinley Williams all completing their college eligibility this season.

The Orange has a verbal commitment from one defensive lineman, Belizaire Bassette, out of Florida, in its Class of 2022.
