BOSTON — The Bruins called him “Haysey” during his two seasons in Boston. In Florida, they called him “Broadway.” Jimmy Hayes, the Dorchester native, who died suddenly in August was a popular teammate in both dressing rooms when he played for each franchise.
So before Boston played Florida, Saturday at TD Garden, the two franchises honored Hayes. During warmups, each player on both teams wore jerseys with “Hayesy” and “Broadway” respectively in place of their own names in tribute.
Prior to the national anthem, TD Garden played a video in Hayes’ memory showing highlights of his career, but also his considerable community and charity work.
An autopsy revealed fentanyl and cocaine were in his system and likely caused the 31-year-old’s death. His family revealed the results publicly in hopes of helping others and raising awareness.
Florida interim coach Andrew Brunette spoke about Hayes before the game.
“I played with Jimmy. A very infectious kid and a pleasure to be around,” he said. “I miss not being able to see him but to be part of it tonight is very special.”
Both teams are auctioning their warmup jerseys for a charity to be determined jointed by the team and Hayes’ family. The Bruins jerseys can be found here while the Panthers’ auction is here. The Bruins are also donating the proceeds from Saturday’s 50/50 raffle to the same charity.
