UFC 267 results: Alexander Volkov outstrikes Marcin Tybura to win unanimous decision

Alexander Volkov stopped Marcin Tybura’s recent streak while getting a win of his own on the UFC 267 main card on Saturday from Abu Dhabi.

While it wasn’t the most exhilarating fight, Volkov showed off his striking skills in a gritty battle against Tybura, who was constantly trying to take the fight to the ground but unable to employ his strategy. Instead, it was Volkov with his long range and better accuracy that got the job done on the feet as he picks up another win against a quality heavyweight opponent.

“I’m probably one of the happiest men on the planet cause just a few days ago I had a newborn son,” Volkov said in celebration. “I did my usual thing with the standup but the key to the victory was stopping the takedown.”

Typically known as a bit of a slow starter, Volkov was on the attack as soon as he came storming out of the corner but he met a willing opponent in Tybura, who was quick to fire back with some heavy punches of his own.

While Volkov was content working from the outside, Tybura attempted to close the distance with a takedown but he ended up finding himself down on the mat after the Russian reversed his attempt. On top, Volkov was methodical yet punishing as he dropped down several shots including a few stiff elbows as Tybura attempted to stall the action to draw a standup.

On the restart in the second round, Tybura continued with a similar game plan as he continued to put pressure on Volkov, who suddenly started to slow down with his offensive output. Tybura wasn’t doing a ton of damage but he was the aggressor as Volkov was essentially stuck throwing counter shots and reacting to whatever the Polish heavyweight was doing.

Knowing that the fight was close after two rounds, Volkov finally started upping his volume, which allowed him to connect on Tybura with several combinations. Volkov was landing on target with much more regularity, although Tybura refused to go away as he continued to return fire in every exchange.

Still, Volkov’s accuracy and output was better than Tybura, who just couldn’t get in deep enough to ever land an effective takedown over three rounds.

Volkov now moves to 3-1 in his past four fights while Tybura’s recent five-fight win streak comes to an end with the loss at UFC 267.
