Police: Tow truck wasn’t stealing vehicle

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Detectives in Richmond now believe that a tow truck thought to have stolen a vehicle had actually towed it lawfully, police said.

Richmond Police released a video Thursday of a vehicle being towed and warned that an unmarked tow truck was being used to quickly steal vehicles. But later in the day, police announced that the truck had been identified and they determined that the vehicle was lawfully towed.

Information from the tow company wasn’t immediately forwarded to police, police said in a news release. So when detectives investigated the missing vehicle, police said they didn’t know that it had been towed legally.
