The cameras are expected to help police and the Board of Education assist with traffic issues around school buildings, officials said, though six still needing wiring.

The cameras will not be monitored 24 hours a day, police said, but the video will be accessible for at least 30 days. That's in accordance with State of Connecticut retention standards, according to police.

The locations were chosen from service-call hot zone maps, officials said. Locations for the cameras can be changed and will be announced publicly by the Police department, police explained. The cameras can also monitor traffic and weather conditions.

Additionally, the cameras can help the Public Works Department with snow ban information. The cameras are equipped with a blue strobe light. When flashing, it indicates a parking ban is in effect.

“This Center will be the cornerstone of a new intelligence-led policing effort by the Department,” Police Chief Scott Sansom said, “East Hartford Police Officers will be using today’s technology to detect, deter and come up with solutions to address crime in Town, with the ultimate goal of making our community safer."
