A major collision shut down traffic on 18th Ave. between Anson Street and Nevada Drive on Wednesday afternoon, and the Marshalltown Police Department advised the public to avoid the area for several hours.

According to MPD Sgt. Andrew Cole, the driver of a Kia Sedona was heading northbound on 18th Ave. at about 1 p.m. when the vehicle crossed the center line and struck a Wausau Supply semi-truck that ended up jack knifed in the road.

The driver of the Kia was transported to the local Unitypoint hospital with unknown injuries, and the semi driver walked away from the accident unscathed.

The Sedona will be considered a total loss, and the semi and trailer have been towed off the scene as of Wednesday afternoon. Charges are pending, and the MPD has not publicly released the name of either driver.

The road reopened at around 4 p.m. on Wednesday after crews worked to remove the semi, sand and spilled diesel fuel. Agencies involved included the MPD, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Department of Commercial Motor Vehicles, Marshalltown Public Works, Marshalltown Water Pollution, Unitypoint ambulance, Dave’s Crane and Wrecker of Union, and Mustaine’s Towing of State Center.
