Nor’easter brings down massive tree in Stonington family’s yard

No one was injured and it missed the house, but now, the clean-up begins and it’s no small job.

STONINGTON, Conn. — This week's nor’easter was powerful enough to bring down trees across parts of Connecticut, including a massive tree in front of a Stonington family’s home.

The strong winds combined with the rain saturating the soil tore down a 60 foot tree on South Broad Street. 11-year-old Jacob Reed heard and saw it come down in his front yard Wednesday morning.

“I was on the couch and I could hear this huge creaking sound behind me,” he said. “When it hit the ground, it made a huge boom."

No one was injured and it missed the house, but now, the clean-up begins and it’s no small job.

“We have our machines, heavy equipment. We have chippers. We have dump trailers, dump trucks. Not to mention, we have about 20 different types of chain saws to attack all different sizes of wood,” CJ Satti, owner of Satti’s Family Trees LLC, said.

Satti’s company was out chopping and hauling at the home Wednesday.

“The flash flooding first; we had a lot of water in the soil, loosening up the soil. A tree this massive caught some wind which we had the winds shortly after and most likely, it came uprooted,” Satti said.

A tree of this size is going to take a couple of days to clean up so crews will be back out in the daylight to get the rest.
