What if I didn’t get my child tax credit? Can I track it? When is the next payment?

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sent out its fourth child tax credit on Oct. 15, and the two payments for the rest of this year will fall on Nov. 15 and Dec. 15.

If you are wondering where your child tax credit for the rest of 2021 is, look no further.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sent out its fourth child tax credit on Oct. 15, and the two payments for the rest of this year will be Nov. 15 and Dec. 15.

But what if you did not receive your child tax credit on schedule? Here is what you need to know about receiving your payment and tracking your payments in the future.

Why didn’t I get a child tax credit this month?

If you did not receive your child tax credit by direct deposit, it could be coming in the mail by the end of October. However, if you did not receive a child tax credit payment from one of the other months, keep reading to find out what to do.

According to the IRS, the agency ran into a technical glitch in September that caused 2% of eligible households to miss September’s payment.

The households affected were mostly people who updated an address or bank account details through the IRS update portal.

The IRS said those payments have been released, but some families may have been overpaid. If your family falls into one of those categories, the October, November and December child tax credit payments you get will be adjusted.

Why didn’t I ever get a child tax credit payment?

There are several reasons you might not have received a child tax credit payment for 2021, even though the advance monthly child tax credits started being deposited in eligible families’ bank accounts in July.

Here are some of the reasons, according to CNET:

  • The IRS may not have a current mailing address or current banking information on file for you
  • The U.S. Postal Service might be holding up your delivery of a paper check
  • Your direct deposit may still be in the process of being processed for direct deposit
  • You were a victim of tax-related identity theft and that issue has not yet been resolved in the eyes of the IRS. (Note: If the issue does not resolve this year, you will get the full amount of what you are owed in 2022, according to the IRS).
  • Your 2020 tax return is still being processed

How do I track my child tax credit payment?

You can track your child tax credit by going to the IRS website and clicking “Manage Payments.”

That will take you to the “Child Tax Credit Update Portal,” where you can check to see if you are enrolled for advance payments, view your past payments, unenroll from the child tax credit program, or update your mailing address and/or bank account information.
