State volleyball brackets
The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the 2A and 1A state tournament brackets Wednesday night.
Dyersville Beckman holds off Wapsie Valley rally
In the first four sets, it was far from vintage Kiersten Schmitt for Dyersville Beckman.
The Trailblazers' senior outside hitter had her moments in the first four games of Wednesday night's Class 2A regional volleyball final with Wapsie Valley at Independence High School.
But when her team needed her most in the decisive fifth set, Schmitt was at her best. The 6-foot Iowa State recruit simply controlled the net, pushing her team to a quick 9-3 lead. Wapsie Valley, which had rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set, didn't have an answer as Beckman posted a 25-20, 25-16, 17-25, 23-25, 15-9 victory, earning the school's fourth state trip in the last five seasons.
"I think we were all really locked in that last set," Schmitt said. "I came out super strong, got a few balls down and I think that got all of us going. We just wanted to win this one so bad."

North Tama knocks off Lisbon for state volleyball return
Jadyn Rausch is a non-traditional setter.
North Tama is a unique team. And on Wednesday, the more aggressive team.
The winning team.
The 12th-ranked Redhawks swung away and knocked off No. 4 Lisbon in a four-set Class 1A volleyball regional final Wednesday night at Benton Community High School.
Scores were 17-25, 27-25, 25-21 and 25-23.
“I knew their schedule, and they hadn’t seen anybody like us,” North Tama Coach Channing Halstead said. “When we’re on, we’re pretty good.”
They were more than pretty good Wednesday. The reward is a third state-tournament berth in the last five years.

Gehlen gets last bid after hour delay
One Class 1A regional final took a little longer to wrap up.
No. 2-ranked Le Mars Gehlen was leading Akron-Westfield 2-0 when the power at Sioux City Heelan went out. That led to a 1-hour, 7-minute delay with the Jays trailing 18-12 in set 3.
The Westerners went on to take the third set, 26-24, then forced a fifth with a 25-20 win in set 4. But Gehlen finally earned the last state tournament bid with a 15-8 win in set 5.
Springville sweeps Saint Ansgar for another trip to state
Springville High School volleyball seasons typically don’t finish in October.
And this year is no exception.
The Class 1A No. 3 Orioles looked sharp in sweeping Saint Ansgar, 25-20, 25-14, 25-12, in a regional final Wednesday night at Siddens Gymnasium.
A battled-tested Springville squad is headed to the state tournament for the seventh time in nine years.
“We knew (Saint Ansgar) had been playing really well, but we felt like we had a good game plan to slow them down,” Orioles coach Claude Howard said. “They were getting some good swings from their outside hitters, and we made some adjustments with trying to block them and take some of that away. Our girls really executed well.”
Springville improved to 33-4 overall while Saint Ansgar had its 13-match winning streak halted in finishing 19-10.

Previewing Wednesday’s Gazette area regional volleyball finals
By Jeff Linder, The Gazette
2A: No. 7 Dyersville Beckman (32-11) vs. No. 8 Wapsie Valley (25-11), at Independence
Probably the best of Wednesday’s 16 regional finals. Beckman looks to return to state after falling in the regional semifinals last year; the Blazers had qualified the previous three years. A co-champion of the rugged Wamac Conference East Division, Beckman sports one of the state’s top players in Iowa State recruit Kiersten Schmitt (5.38 kills per set, .347 efficiency). Wapsie Valley is up a class after qualifying in 1A in 2019 and 2020. The Warriors were one of the favorites to win the small-school title last year but were unable to compete due to a COVID outbreak between regionals and state. Six starters are back from that squad, led by Lydia Imbrogno (3.69 kills per set).
1A: No. 3 Springville (32-4) vs. Saint Ansgar (19-9), at Waterloo West
Springville is accustomed to November volleyball, and a win Wednesday would land the Orioles at the state tournament for the seventh time in nine years. They’re favored to advance behind a veteran crew; six starters are back from last year’s team, led by Tri-Rivers West Division player of the year Nia Howard (8.89 assists per set), who also is one of six players with more than 100 kills this season. Lauren Wilson leads the team with 2.57 kills per set. Springville avenged a late-season loss to Edgewood-Colesburg, sweeping the Vikings in Monday’s regional semifinal. Saint Ansgar carries a 13-match winning streak, and only one of the Saints’ losses have come against 1A competition. Four hitters average more than 1 kill per set, none more than 2.
1A: No. 4 Lisbon (36-6) vs. No. 12 North Tama (29-10), at Van Horne
Lisbon’s catchphrase is #BreakTheRock, and a regional-final victory would be a breakthrough, indeed. The Lions are 0-3 in regional finals, including an upset loss to Springville in 2019. But this is Lance Kamaus’ best team yet, led by junior Peyton Robinson, the Tri-Rivers Conference East Division player of the year. Robinson averages 3.28 kills per set, but is even more valuable in the back row, where she posts 4.51 digs per set. Ava Czarnecki adds 3.26 kills per set, Kali Nelson 9.51 assists per set. The Lions are 20-2 against 1A competition, with both losses coming to Springville. North Tama earned state trips in 2017 and 2019, and looks to get back behind a new nucleus piloted by junior setter Jadyn Rausch, who averaged 6.56 assists per set and is second on the team in kills.
