Mark Ingram on the move in NFL trade

Houston Texans running back Mark Ingram carries the football during an NFL game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

When Mark Ingram left the New Orleans Saints after the 2018 season, the former Alabama All-American was 90 yards from replacing Deuce McAllister as the franchise’s all-time leading rusher.

It looks as though Ingram is going to get an opportunity to reach that record after all.

The Houston Texans are trading the running back to his original NFL team, NFL Network reported on Wednesday.

Ingram joined the Saints as a first-round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft and played for New Orleans for eight seasons. With the Saints, Ingram ran for 6,007 yards and a franchise-record 50 touchdowns on 1,321 carries and caught 228 passes for 1,598 yards and five touchdowns.

Ingram leads the Texans with 294 yards and one touchdown on 92 rushing attempts this season.

Ingram signed with Houston during the offseason after he was let go by the Baltimore Ravens with one season left on a three-year contract.

Ingram left New Orleans as a free agent after the 2018 season. In his first season with the Ravens, Ingram recorded his third 1,000-yard rushing season and earned a Pro Bowl invitation. But in 2020, his production dropped to 299 yards and two touchdowns on 72 carries in 11 games, and Baltimore’s turn to young backs Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins led to Ingram’s release after the season.

Alvin Kamara leads the Saints with 419 yards and one touchdown on 114 rushing attempts, but he’s the only New Orleans running back with more than 77 rushing yards this season.

Backup quarterback Taysom Hill fills a variety of roles for the Saints, including short-yardage back. He missed Monday night’s 13-10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks because of a concussion. New Orleans did not practice on Wednesday, but the Saints said Hill would not have been able to if they had..

Houston has a 1-6 record this season while the Saints are 4-2 in 2021.

New Orleans is scheduled to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in an NFC South contest at 3:25 p.m. CDT Sunday at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
