Eversource crews restored power to more than 129,000 customers by about 2 p.m. Wednesday but there are still roughly 450,000 households and businesses without power across Massachusetts.

The worst of the outages are across Cape Cod, according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). The outages includes approximately 260,000 Eversource customers and about 220,000 customers National Grid customers.

“This Nor’easter brought roaring winds with gusts upwards of 90 miles per hour to Massachusetts, causing widespread damage and outages in every region of the state,” said Eversource Vice President of Electric Operations Bill Ritchie. “The electric system continues to take on damage, and once the winds subside and debris is cleared from the roadways, we will be able to complete our assessment and have a clearer idea about a restoration timeline.”

Ritchie also stated that additional out-of-state crews have been brought in to help repair the damage.

“Our dedicated employees will not stop working until all of our customers in the commonwealth have power,” Ritchie said.

Power was out for nearly all customers on Cape Cod and the South Shore Wednesday morning, according to a map generated by the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.

“With parts of Massachusetts still experiencing hazardous wind gusts from this nor’easter and the potential for additional outages, particularly along the South Shore and Cape, the energy company will need to continue damage assessment before a global restoration time is available,” an Eversource spokesperson said.

The company said that thousands of line, tree and service workers, damage assessors, troubleshooters and other support staff are on the ground working to bring power back to those that need it.

It could also take three days for National Grid’s 2,400 field workers to restore power to all of its more-than 220,000 Massachusetts customers without electricity, Christine Milligan, a company spokesperson, said. Another 92,000 customers are without power in Rhode Island.

Eversource is asking customers who smell gas to leave their homes immediately, call 911 from a safe place and call 800–592–2000 in Eastern Massachusetts or 800-525-8222 for former Columbia Gas customers.

Always stay clear of any downed wires and report them immediately.
